5 terrorists killed, 5 security personnel martyred in Kupwara encounter

Two Army jawans and two policemen were killed today in an ongoing encounter between militants and security forces in Kupwara district's Halmatpora forest area in Jammu and Kashmir.

Three Army jawans and two policemen were killed today in a fierce gun battle between security forces and militants in Jammu and Kashmirs Kupwara district.

The forces have recovered five bodies of terrorists who were killed in the encounter that has been going on for the past 38 hours in Halmatpora's forest area.

Official sources told India Today that two more policemen of the Special Operations Group (SOG) were also injured.

The injured were rushed to a medical institute at the nearby Army camp and are currently undergoing treatment.

Earlier, it was reported that three security personnel including an Army jawan identified as Ranjeet Singh were injured. However, latest reports confirm Ranjeet succumbed to his injuries, attaining martyrdom along with a fifth jawan.

The jawan who was killed first has been identified as Mohammad Ashraf Rather and the SOG men as Mohammad Yousuf and Deepak Thesoo.

According to an Army official, four militants were killed yesterday in the gunfight that broke out in Halmatpora's Check Fatehkhan forest area, about 110 km from Srinagar.

J&K DGP SP Vaid confirmed the killing of militants in a tweet saying that the fourth terrorist's body has been recovered from the encounter site.

He added that three security personnel were martyred and the firing is still underway.

The forest area was cordoned off by joint contingents of Army and police on Tuesday afternoon following intelligence information about presence of militants, said police.

"Additional reinforcements were called in to take on militants in the area. Search operation is underway," a police official said.
