Major controversies in each IPL season

The Indian Premier League is a cricket tournament dotted with glamour and glitz and sequenced with controversies and gossip. Every season has seen some incident that took that little bit of sport out of the game. Here are the major controversies in each IPL season so far:

Slapgate (2008)

The first season of IPL saw veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh slapping Punjab’s S Sreesanth after their match in Mohali. Reason unknown, it is believed Sreesanth said something offensive. The incident created a major uproar, and Bhajji apologized later but was banned for the remaining 11 matches of the T20 tournament.

Pakistan bans cricketers from IPL (2009)

Due to the terror attacks in Mumbai in 2008, the Pakistan government deemed it unsafe for their players to travel to India.

Lalit Modi sacked (2010)

2010 saw the sacking of IPL founder and chairman from the board for misconduct and wrongdoings.

‘Like Walking Porn’/Sourav Ganguly dumped (2011)

South African cheerleader Gabriella Pasqualotto alleged that the IPL league treated them like ‘meat.’ This season also saw Sourav Ganguly’s dumping from KKR after a reported double price hike.

Signs of Spot-fixing (2012)/SRK Wankhede ban (2012)

After a sting operation by a news channel, BCCI awarded a life ban to TP Sudhindra, a five-year ban to Shalabh Srivastava, and a year ban for Mohnish Mishra, Abhinav Bali, and Amit Yadav on the charges of a spot-fixing.

KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan got into a fight with the security, and Mumbai Cricket Association banned him from entering Wankahde for five years.

Gautam Gambhir-Virat Kohli spat (2013)

Altercations went flying after Kohli charged at Gambhir for purposely giving him a send-off. Delhi player Rajat Bhatia calmed the duo.

Zinta-Wadia fight/Starc-Pollard altercation (2014)

The much-publicized romance of Ness Wadia and Preity Zinta came to an abrupt end after the actress lodged a police complaint against Wadia.

RCB's Mitchell Starc and Mumbai Indians’ Kieron Pollard got into a near-physical fight on the field, with Chris Gayle coming to the rescue. Both players were heavily fined.

Kohli breaks BCCI guidelines (2015)

The RCB skipper stepped out of the arena to meet actress Anushka Sharma during the rain break of an IPL match. The romantic gesture was a breach of BCCI's anti-corruption guidelines. He was released with a verbal warning.

IPL moved out of Maharashtra/Bhogle sacked (2016)

Due to Maharashtra’s drought conditions and the wastage of water required to maintain the pitch, IPL was moved out of the state.

The Indian cricket board dropped Harsha Bhogle from the commentary team after negative feedback from players and social media.

Pollard vs. Manjrekar tiff (2017)

After some verbal diarrhea from Sanjay Majrekar against Pollard, the Mumbai Indians all-rounder lashed out on social media after Mumbai’s hard-fought 4-wicket win over Kolkata.

The Fall-Out (2018)

Preity Zinta, the co-owner of Kings XI Punjab, blamed Virender Sehwag for their defeat against Rajasthan Royals. The fall-out created quite a news.

Mankading (2019)

Ravichandran Ashwin ‘Mankaded’ Jos Buttler during the match between RR and Kings XI Punjab. Though Ashwin maintains this is within cricketing laws, but cricket lovers don't believe Mankad is in the game’s spirit.

Umpiring glitch (2020)

Umpire Paul Reiffel stretched his arms to signal a wide during the 19th over a match between CSK and SRH. Dhoni and Shardul Thakur were not happy with this decision.
