Former Indian cricketer and legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar is all set to replace Mahela Jayawardene as Mumbai Indians coach. Mumbai Indians management on Saturday decided to take a call ahead of the upcoming 10th season of the Indian Premier League.
IPL 10 is scheduled for start from April 5. Mumbai Indians will face Rising Pune Supergiants in their first match on April 6 at Maharashtra Cricket Association’s International Stadium in Pune.
It has been reliably learnt that former Mumbai Indians’ player Ricky Ponting played an important hand in recommending Sachin for the job to owner Nita Ambani. Also, the MI coaching management consulted the number of current team players, before finalising Tendulkar’s appointment.
Sachin is likely to join Mumbai Indians squad from April 2, when they are scheduled for the practice session. “The contract with Sachin is for three years,” Mumbai Indians said in a press release.
“Sachin Tendulkar’s appointment has come in the wake of Mahela Jayawardene resigning from the post due to personal reasons,” the franchise announced in a media release issued on Saturday.
“I am very excited by the appointment and glad that the Mumbai Indians management appreciated my presentation and ideas,” Sachin said. “In what is a new chapter in my career, I will be striving hard to bring them [Mumbai] more on-field success and joy.”
After retiring from international cricket, Tendulkar has been actively involved with his former IPL team.
