Introducing the 2018 anti-pinup calendar: It's what 'year of the woman' looks like

In the wake of the 2016 election, many seized the day, making 2017 the unofficial “year of the woman.” It began with the Women’s March, which inspired 4 million people in the U.S. alone to join in a show of solidarity for equal gender rights and representation. Naturally, fashion took part, selling everything from slogan T-shirts to pussy hats.

Now, there’s a calendar.

New York City-based handbag company Kara released a cheeky, body-positive desk calendar depicting women of varying sizes (who apparently have a penchant for hanging out naked), created this year by Chicago-based illustrator Tara Booth.

Kara has released a new desk calendar annually since 2014, but only privately, to its business partners and friends of the brand. This year, the brand noticed that its fans were asking for the calendars for themselves and decided to make the calendars available for purchase for the first time, according to a statement from the company.

“The calendar is a play on the standard pinup calendar, which typically features women with unrealistic body proportions in uncomfortable seductive poses,” a press release says. “The Kara desk calendar celebrates real women — illustrated by women, revealing moments with a dose of reality and sense of humor.”

For $25, it’s an affordable (and amusing) reminder that sometimes people just want to grab a snorkel and hang out in a bathtub or eat some pizza in a leotard. Oh, and it comes with stickers.

As for the brand, Kara was founded in 2013 and sells handbags and accessories ranging from $90 to $595. While they’re a fashion-girl favorite if you’re willing to spend a little more on your own holiday present, think of the calendar as the stocking stuffer for everyone else (and yourself, too!).
