Institute of rehabilitation declared as centre of excellence

Thrissur, Feb 6 (PTI): KeralaChief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday declared the National Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (NIPMR), an autonomous organisation, as centre of excellence.

The organisation provides multi-disciplinary intervention and rehabilitation of differently-abled people.

The Chief Minister made the declaration of NIPMR as a centre of excellence through video conference.

Minister for Health, Social Justice and Woman and Child Development K K Shailaja presided over the function heldat Kallettumkara near Irinjalakuda here.

Vijayan appreciated the initiatives taken by NIPMR in the area of rehabilitation of differently-abled people.

'The goal of the government is to take differently-abled people to the mainstream and it has launched various programmes, including Anuyatra, for the same. Early intervention centres have been set up in all the districts and all the medical colleges for identifying and treating the issues at an early stage, Chief Minister said in a press release.

He said the most-modern therapy centres, one of the best aquatic rehabilitation centres, and the virtual reality unit make NIPMR different.

Vijayan expressed hope that the academic programmes launched by NIPMR would help address the shortage of professionals in the field of rehabilitation of differently- abled people.

Shailaja said institutes at international-level can be set up in the state and NIPMR is an example for the same.

'The government will set up centres across the state for the rehabilitation of differently-abled people after the death of their parents and the help of various NGOs will be sought for the purpose,' Shailaja said.

An autonomous organisation under the Social Justice Department, NIPMR has been equipped with the latest technologies and expertise in the field of rehabilitation.

The institute has grown into a centre of excellence in the field of rehabilitation of differently-abled by setting up the latest facilities including state-of-the-art spinal injury rehabilitation unit, aquatic rehabilitation centre, art ability centre, ear mould lab, call and connect information gateway for differently-abled, prosthetics and orthotics unit, sensory park, sensory garden, and virtual rehabilitation unit and launching latest therapies.
