Recently there has been an uprising of fake Instagram profiles, with the option of buying followers which makes it easy to mimic the page of a celebrity or a well known public personality.
This helps people masquerade as a ‘social media influencer’ or a brand page. Having a high number of followers does give one the impression of genuineness.
However that’s just one part of the trick. The blue tick alongside the account is what stamps the authenticity and legitimacy of a profile on Instagram.
Although, Instagram isn’t doling out these blue ticks to everyone, even then it is giving users the option to enroll themselves to apply for the same.
Instagram didn’t provide an option to request verification previously, which left lot of brands, popular personalities, companies unverified.
The picture sharing application states that it evaluate accounts for verification on a number of grounds: Authenticity, how unique it is to the business or the person, the account must be public with a complete bio section, and a profile photo with at least one post.
Instagram mentions on its website that it reviews accounts of famous brands or celebrities based on original content and not something that’s paid or promotional.
One other solution is to buy the blue tick through the online black market or some other third party source. However, this is still not legitimate. To counter such a problem, Instagram has now provided the feature to request verification to all of its users and here’s how to do it:
Go to your Instagram profile, tap the hamburger menu on the top right and select Settings at the bottom.
Select Account option from the Settings menu, which will take to the section where you apply for verification of the user.
Select Request Verification and you’ll be asked for particular details that’ll help Instagram evaluate the prospect of the account getting verified.
Fill out all the required details like your full name, name of brand or company and also a name to be used on Instagram.
Select the category for your account and upload a document verifying your identity such as Aadhaar Card, driver’s license, passport or official business documents. After filling the details hit send.
Although you can request for your account to be verified, don’t keep your hopes up to get a blue tick as the verification process does not guarantee that your profile will get the verified badge.
