Indrani Mukerjea keeping jail officers on toes since drug overdose incident

Indrani Mukerjea, under custody in a Mumbai's Byculla jail, is keeping the authorities on tenterhooks post drug overdose. She is also said to have consulted a lawyer for her matrimonial issue.

Former INX Media chief Indrani Mukerjea, under custody in a Mumbai jail, is keeping the authorities there on tenterhooks following an alleged drug overdose.

The Byculla jail authorities are on their toes since April 7 when Indrani had to undergo a brain MRI scan and other tests after she was rushed to Mumbai's Sir JJ Hospital.

Indrani, 46, is alleged to have consumed an overdose of a medicine that was not prescribed. The jail authorities are investigating as to how she managed to get so many medicines without a prescription.

Indrani was out of prison for the hearing in the Sheena Bora case after almost a week and the jail authorities around her have been on their tenterhooks trying to protect her. She seemed to have lost a lot of weight and mentioned that she was still recovering.

Following the incident, the special CBI court, which has Indrani's custody, has asked all the accused in the Sheena Bora murder case - her husband Peter and former husband and co-accused Sanjeev Khanna - to not eat any outside food or talk to people not connected with the case.

Indrani is in custody since August 2015 as one of the prime accused in the April 2012 disappearance and subsequent murder of her 24-year old daughter Sheena Bora. In that year too, Indrani had to be rushed to the hospital for a similar medical emergency arising out of a suspected drug overdose and remained under treatment for nearly a week.

Meanwhile, there are indications that Indrani Mukerjea is consulting a lawyer for her matrimonial issues with her husband and former TV head honcho, Peter Mukerjea.

Soon after the hearing in a Mumbai court, Indrani wanted to speak to her lawyer Gunjan Mangla while the jail officials wanted to take her away. Indrani requested the judge for a "two minutes" permission to speak to her lawyer. The court allowed.

While she was speaking to Mangla, Indrani started speaking with another lawyer present there. At this point, Judge Jagdale asked her who the other lawyer was. By the time Mangla could tell the court that the lawyer in question was advocate Edith Dey who handles matrimonial issues, CBI lawyer Kavita Patil raised an alarm, saying that no other lawyer should be allowed to meet Indrani.

"Anyone can just come in wearing a lawyer's white band and say they are lawyers," Patil said. In the commotion that followed, jail officials took Indrani away.

Indrani and Peter have been married for 16 years. It was in January 2017, soon after the charges were framed against the three accused in the Sheena Bora case, that Indrani had told the court that she intended to move the family court to seek a divorce from Peter.

However, for the most part of the year, Indrani seems to have done nothing about it, although talks of a financial settlement between the two leading to a mutual separation did go on.

However, Edith Dey's presence in court for the last few hearings has fuelled speculation of the two separating.
