Ahead of his side’s clash against Singapore on Nov 9, Indonesia’s coach Bima Sakti has already started the mind games by digging up the past.
In what can be construed as a dig towards Singapore’s coach Fandi Ahmad, Bima brought up memories of the past and stated how he had already once beaten Fandi, when they were both players of their respective nations.
Tim Garuda’s coach was part of Indonesia’s 1997 SEA Games squad which defeated Singapore in the semi-final 2-1. In that match Indonesia’s goals were scored by Bima and Fakhri Husaini while the Lions’ only goal was netted by Fandi.
“I played against him (Fandi) in 1997, it was a tight game but his movements caught us (Indonesia) off guard and he scored a goal through a header,” recalled Bima.
“Fortunately for us, we won 2-1 in that game which was at the 1997 SEA Games in Jakarta in .”
On a coaching level, Bima is also confident that he can achieve a positive result against his Singapore counterpart, especially after he bore witness to Indonesia’s U-23 side defeating Singapore’s U-23 team 3-0 earlier this year. At that time he was an assistant coach to Luis Milla.
“In the U-23 game between Indonesia and Singapore, we managed to get a taste of Singapore’s style of play. We also recognised the coach’s character and how he will set his team up.”
