05 Feb 2021: India vs England: 'Century in 100th Test special', says Root

England skipper Joe Root made his 100th Test appearance memorable after slamming his 20th century.

Root became the ninth player and third Englishman to do so.

He reached the milestone on Day 1 of the first Test against India at the Chepauk.

Root highlighted his achievement in the post-match presentation as he helped England post 263/3 at stumps.

Here is more.

Hundred: The hundred will mean more if England win: Root

Speaking on his achievement, Root said, "I am a firm believer that your next hundred is your best hundred. It will mean a lot more if we can get a result from this game."

"To get a hundred in my 100th Test is special but I hope there is more to come tomorrow and it helps to put up a substantial total."

Milestones: A look at the milestones he attained

Root, aged 30 years and 37 days, became the third-youngest to play 100 Tests after Alastair Cook (28y, 353d) and Sachin Tendulkar (29y, 134d).

The 30-year-old made it special by notching his 20th Test hundred.

Root has become the fifth captain to score a ton in his 100th Test after Colin Cowdrey, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Ricky Ponting (2), and Graeme Smith.

Conditions: Root knows how to play in Indian conditions

Interestingly, Root now has a 50+ score in each of his seven Tests in India.

This shows how well he plays in India.

"It's on the slower side and I feel like it will spin as the game goes on, a little bit of reverse swing as the day unfolded. It was a good contest. They made us work hard for runs," added Root.

Gesture: Spirit of Cricket: How Virat Kohli's moving gesture won hearts

The two captains, Root and Virat Kohli, who had been at loggerheads in past, shared a heart-warming moment on the field today.

In the third session, Root was struggling with a cramp after slog-sweeping Ravichandran Ashwin for a maximum.

Kohli, who made his comeback from a six-week paternity leave at Chepauk, showcased his sportsmanship, helping out Root.

His gesture won the hearts of fans.
