‘Tis the season for “tartan eleganza.” This fashion concept, which blew up in 2015 thanks to RuPaul’s Drag Race, has been reinvigorated on Instagram, and people are freaking out.
The look in question made its runway debut on the Season 7 premiere of the hit show, when drag queen Violet Chachki strutted out in a highly versatile ensemble: a glamorous black sequined gown, teamed with red plaid gloves and a matching hat (note the contrasting pattern). A second later, after Violet tossed the belt to the ground, the dress transformed into a sparkly tartan plaid jumpsuit before your very eyes. The judges, including RuPaul and Carson Kressley, freaked out. “I’m giving you tartan eleganza,” Jason Dardo, Violet’s creator, said. “Being able to serve two looks in one is a talent.” That’s for sure.
How was this possible? The sleeves of the dress were folded inwards to create a wrap aesthetic. When the belt was removed, the outfit revealed a skintight jumpsuit with butterfly sleeves.
While we may have forgotten about this epic look in the two-year interim, Hung Vanngo found the perfect excuse to bring back the fashion moment. “Now that Halloween is over… ,” Vanngo captioned a clip of the dress morphing.
The dress was a huge hit when it debuted, and it’s an even bigger hit now; Vanngo’s post has over 138k likes. “Cooooooooooooool ✨,” cooed one fan. “He is me, I am him: SHOOK,” described another.
Kressley’s expression got almost as much attention as the outfit. “That man is me,” one follower said. “Love Carson ,” wrote another. “looool that guy was so shook,” a third pointed out. “His expression.. I can’t .”
The only question is, how can we get our hands on this one-of-a-kind dress before it’s no longer in season?!
