Calcutta: The Eden saw a grand celebration last year after the Kolkata Knight Riders lifted their maiden Indian Premier League crown. The city is all set to witness something similar as Shah Rukh Khan's franchise plans a grand opening ceremony for the upcoming sixth edition of the tournament.
The meet begins on April 3, with the Knights facing the Delhi DareDevils in the openers.
Representatives from the franchise and event management company IMG had a meeting with Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) officials, on Wednesday, to discuss the nitty-gritty of the opening ceremony.
At the meeting, it was decided that the franchise would be in charge of the venue from March 15.
"It was basically a routine visit… As far as we are concerned, we need to finish all the stadium-related work by March 15 before the Knights take over," CAB joint-secretary Subir Ganguly said.
Although sections in the CAB feel that the Eden should host the opening ceremony, it is learnt that Netaji Indoor Stadium and the Mohun Bagan ground have also been short-listed as prospective venues for the function.
"The Netaji Indoor Stadium and Bagan ground are certainly being discussed... But what if there are fireworks in the ceremony? That obviously can't happen indoors. So in that case, the Salt Lake Stadium, too, could be one of the venues," a senior CAB official said.
However, a final decision on the venue opening ceremony will only be taken after consulting the sponsors. The co-sponsors of the tournament are yet to be finalised.
"Much will depend on the sponsors as far as the venue of the opening ceremony is concerned. As of now, it appears that the sponsor will organise promotional events for a couple of days apart from the ceremony. So it could turn out to be a three-day event," the official said.
