Hyundai i20 N unveiled with over 200PS and six-speed manual

While we await the launch of the new-generation Hyundai i20 in India, the Korean carmaker has unveiled the top-tier performance version of the hatchback internationally. The Hyundai i20 N is the third full-fat model from Hyundai's N performance sub-brand following the Hyundai i30 N and i30 N Fastback and draws quite a bit from Hyundai's successful WRC-spec i20 rally cars.

As with earlier N models, there have been subtle, functional changes made to the i20's bodywork to get it up N spec. These include the larger grille aperture for better cooling, the new chequered flag-inspired grille detailing, a new bumper design with differing foglamp inserts and red accenting. This red highlighting carries on to the new side skirts along the i20 N's length and into the also-new rear bumper. At the rear, there is a striking new WRC-inspired roof spoiler, the more prominent diffuser-style elements and centrally mounted rear fog lamp and an oval exhaust. Final touches include darkened light clusters and unique 18-inch wheels with N-branded callipers. The i20 N will be available in five dual-tone and one single-tone colour option, including N-specific Performance Blue paint option.

On the inside, the i20 N features an all-black theme with a new set of sports seats and headrests. Also new are the N-specific gear lever and aluminium pedals as well as an N steering wheel with customisable hotkeys and an integrated button for the rev-matching function. There are unique graphics in the instrumentation and infotainment which depict engine oil temperature and incorporate shift lights.

As for what powers the i20 N, a 1.6-litre turbo petrol first seen on the new Sonata makes 204PS and 275 Nm. With only 1,190 kg to lug around, this engine gets the i20 N to 100 kmph from standstill in 6.7s and on to a 230 kmph top-speed. In good news for hardened enthusiasts, the i20 N is being offered at launch with a six-speed manual. This gearbox has been reinforced to cope with the higher outputs of this engine and even features a launch control function.

Also added is the N Corner Carving Differential, a mechanical limited-slip diff for the front axle. The chassis has also been reworked at 12 different points for more stiffness while the suspension features reinforced front domes and knuckles and a new anti-roll bar, springs and shock absorbers. There's also the N Power Sense front axle and a new torsion-beam rear axle. The brakes are 40mm larger while the whole car also now sits 10mm lower. Finally, the steering has been made more direct in comparison to the standard i20.

The N Grin Control System drive selector offers five modes: Normal, Eco, Sport, N and N Custom. the N Custom further offers Normal, Eco, Sport and Sport+ settings. These customisations are then saveable on the steering N buttons. Other go-faster bits are a three-stage stability control system, a new exhaust system with an ambient sound generator, brake pedals calibrated for left-foot braking, a brake pad wear indicator (PWI), and dedicated 215/40 R18 Pirelli P-Zero tyres.

We do know that Hyundai India has been considering its N models for India and this i20 N could just be the right mix of performance and affordability to help kick off that sub-brand in India.
