Honda Brio discontinued in India, Amaze becomes company's new entry-level car
Honda Brio's more than 17-year stint has come to an end in India with the Japanese carmaker putting a full stop to the production of the company's hatchback in the country. Following this move, compact sedan Amaze has become the firm's entry-level vehicle in the Indian market.
This does not come as a surprise, since there have already been rumours about the company discontinuing Brio. In November 2018, there were several reports claiming that Honda will cease the production of the hatchback. However, there was nothing official then.
But now it is official. "Our entry car is now Amaze. We have stopped production of Brio and as of now, we do not intend to bring next-generation Brio into India," Honda Cars India Senior Vice-President and Director (Sales and Marketing) Rajesh Goel told PTI.
Brio was launched in India in September 2001 and the news agency's report claimed that Honda has sold around 97,000 units of the hatchback till date.
Equipped with an advanced 1.2-litre SOHC i-VTEC petrol engine, Brio packed a powerful punch. The motor churned out 88 PS of power at 6,000 rpm and 109 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. The powertrain was mated to a five-speed manual gearbox with an option for a five-speed automatic transmission as well.
Honda Brio was priced between Rs 4.73 lakh and Rs 6.81 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and challenged the likes of Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Grand i10 and Tata Tiago. However, its sales figures could not match up with those of its more prolific rivals.
Goyal also denied that Honda would bring any new entry-level model in Brio's place. "Amaze is going to be our entry model in the Indian market," he said.
A new generation of Honda Brio could have been a possibility, given the fact that the company did such a treatment with Amaze. But now with the company making it official that the production of the hatchback has been ceased, it is the end of road for the peppy car in India.
