Himanta Biswa Sarma's campaign called off 48 hours early by the Election Commission

The Election Commission on Friday barred Himanta Biswa Sarma, a BJP leader and the party's "star campaigner" in Assam, from campaigning for 48 hours for allegedly threatening the chairman of the Bodoland People's Front, a Congress alliance partner in the state. The EC said it strongly condemned Sarma's threat to BPF leader Hagrama Mohilary that he will be detained by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), finding it to be prima facie a breach of the model code of conduct. The EC did not find Sarma's clarification acceptable, even though he rejected threats to Mohilary and attempted to persuade voters not to vote for the Congress alliance in his response to the EC notice served on him on Thursday.
