He’s going to have trials with IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab
Kató Jónsson, a mystery spinner from Iceland, might be donning the red kit as an additional member of the team, according to Kings XI Punjab’s official Twitter handle. Sometimes life takes extraordinary twists and turns. I am so excited to be visiting Mohali tomorrow for a truly extraordinary opportunity. Áfram Ísland! #IPL2019, Jónsson tweeted yesterday on the incredible development.
Jónsson’s Twitter profile is rather impressive: “Iceland’s only cricket writer and broadcaster. Secretary of the Iceland Cricket Board. Iceland team’s mystery spinner. Commentator since 2009. BBC since 2017.” A report on Kings XI Punjab’s official website said, Jónsson could become the first Icelandic cricketer to play in the Indian Premier League, joining an ever-growing list of mystery spinners from developing cricketing nations to play in the IPL.
The report added that Jónsson is making wakes back in Europe due to a delivery named fíflið or the backspinner, “which when delivered with the fingers ripped under the ball, drops about half of its pace after bouncing, making it difficult for batsmen to time their shots.”
Sunil Narine was among the first prominent mystery spinners to make waves in the IPL, and Jónsson would be keen to follow in his footsteps.
