This oil, especially the extra virgin type, is part of many diet programs and people are usually advised to make this fat a part of their lifestyle.

Inflammation is the body's natural defense mechanism to fight against diseases but when it lasts for long periods of time, it can lead to a harmful state of chronic inflammation.

Olive oil contains oleocanthal, an antioxidant that significantly reduces inflammation.

It is also believed that 50ml of extra virgin olive oil has a similar effect as 10% of the adult dosage of ibuprofen.

Stroke: Only monosaturated fat source contributing to lower risk of stroke

A stroke occurs when there's an interruption in the blood flow to the brain.

A study conducted on 841,000 participants found that olive oil is the only monosaturated fat source that contributed to a lower risk of stroke.

Experts suggest avoiding animal-based fats like margarine, butter, dairy fat, and mayonnaise for better heart health.

However, do note that it's not the only heart-loving oil.

Weight: Three-year study found olive oil-rich diet causes weight loss

One may think olive oil is a type of fat that could feature in the list of foods that cause weight gain.

But surprisingly, numerous studies point out that even upon consuming large amounts of olive oil, the weight of a person doesn't increase.

In fact, a three-year study on 187 participants found that a diet rich in this oil was linked to weight loss.

People in Mediterranean countries have a lower risk of some cancers and researchers believe that olive oil is the main reason for this.

This is because the antioxidants present in the oil can reduce the oxidative damage caused by free radicals, which causes cancer.

Though studies are in the nascent stage, some test-tube studies prove the cancer-fighting properties of olive oil.
