The makers of Half Girlfriend have just dropped the trailer of the movie and we must say that Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor’s jodi sure looks interesting. Mohit Suri does what he does the best: Portray impossible love stories with a lot of drama and amplified emotions. Soulful music to complement this all guns blazing ‘Aashiqui’ is his USP. Shraddha Kapoor is his trusted actor who has is a poster girl for today’s girl both modern and vulnerable. Arjun Kapoor comes out of his image of a Punjabi munda to play a Bihari boy in this one. The director hopes to use his rustic charm and contrast it with Shraddha’s poised appeal to give us an unforgettable love story.
The trailer of the movie adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s book of the same name is out and it has all these elements but we don’t know if there is anything new or more to it. Now, we have seen this kind of love story in 2 States, Aaquiqui 2, Ek Villain and more movies of this genre. So, will we get to see something more or unique this time? We will have to wait for the movie’s release to find an answer to that question. But one thing is for sure, the film will have strong competition from Yash Raj Films’ next Meri Pyaari Bindu – both 2017 releases. Parallels can be drawn between these two movies because both have fresh pairing and are new age love stories attempting to depict what love means to youngsters today. But unlike Half Girlfriend, Meri Pyaari Bindu does not have loud rona-dhona scenes or a full dramatic display of emotion by the leads. Instead, it takes you back into the memory lanes of your childhood, makes you wistfully remember your first crush and you feel the rush of your first love and a subsequent heartbreak.ALSO READ: Half Girlfriend trailer OUT: Arjun Kapoor – Shraddha Kapoor promise to take you on an emotional roller coaster ride (watch video)
Though both have their fan bases, we feel that somehow with Meri Pyaari Bindu, the makers have cracked the code to depict a love story for the quintessential 80s-90s kids. Though Mohit Suri’s movies rely heavily on good music, and Half Girlfriend seems no different, Meri Pyaari Bindu has used old, evergreen tracks from Hindi Cinema’s Golden Age of the late seventies till nineties and I think that will work in it’s favour. Also, the tone of the movie is easy-breezy but not entirely light. The outlook towards making a film like this looks fresh and the cast too seems perfect.
