Gujarat Civic Election 2018 Results: BJP Wins 27 Out of 28 Seats in PM Narendra Modi’s Hometown Vadnagar
Ahmedabad, Feb 19: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday registered a thumping victory on Vadnagar Nagarpalika as counting was being held for Gujarat Civic Elections 2018. The BJP won 27 out of 28 seats in Vadnagar Nagarpalika. Vadnagar is the hometown of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It was relief for the BJP, which had lost the Unjha constituency in Mehsana district (which covers Vadnagar) in the recently concluded Gujarat Assembly Elections 2017. The BJP also retained power in Gadhda municipality in Botad district and Dwarka municipality in Devbhumi Dwarka district. It also won Kalavad and Jamjodhpur municipalities in Jamnagar district and Karamsad Municipality in Kheda district. (Catch Live updates on results of Gujarat Municipality Elections)
Meanwhile, even as the BJP was ahead in the Gujarat civic polls, the Congress emerged to be giving a tough fight to the ruling party. Polling for 74 municipalities spread across 22 districts of Gujarat was held on February 17. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had won 60 of these Nagar Palikas in 2013 elections. Polling was also held in two district Panchayats, 17 Taluka Panchayats and 1423 Gram Panchayats of Gujarat. It was after almost 10 years that the Congress contested local polls in Gujarat on its symbol. The party used to field candidates or panels as independents with their support. According to Congress in-charge of Gujarat Ashok Gehlot, the party needs to revive the symbol of Congress in urban areas.
