Washington, May 22 (IANS) A prison guard was killed in the southern US state of Mississippi when a riot broke out in the facility.

The fighting erupted Sunday at a correctional centre in Adams County. The guard was beaten to death and at least five other prison officers were among 19 wounded.

About 300 inmates, most of them male undocumented immigrants, were involved in the riot, Xinhua reported.

Anti-riot police and guards fired tear gas on the rioting inmates and the disturbance was brought under control early Monday, Adams County sheriff's office said.
