Govt has failed in curbing casualties in J&K, NE: Cong

New Delhi, Apr 28 (PTI) The Congress today alleged the government has “completely failed” in curbing casualties of civilians and security forces in Kashmir, the North East, Naxal-hit areas and also questioned the BJP’s nationalist credentials.

The Congress said the casualties were far more during the 35 months of the current dispensation compared to the UPA government.

Party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi attacked the prime minister and the NDA government for talking about nationalism and indulging in “jingoism” instead. He also attacked the government for its failure on China which “humiliated” the country many times, including on the issue of Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Sayeed.

“This is the most hypocritical double-faced, double-speak government this country has ever seen.

“This is the most hypocritical, double-faced, double- speak prime minister because the PM has lashed out on far lesser violations on the previous government and today with an absolute straight face, everybody in the government is out to defend what is happening,” he told reporters.

Attacking the government on Jammu and Kashmir, the North East, China, Indo-Pak and Naxalism, he said “it is distressing, horrifying and most painful” that there has been a 100 per cent increase in the facets of deaths of civilians and jawans.

“This government has completely failed. Why does it talk of nationalism when it has failed in curbing casualties,” he said and asked the government has been indulging in jingoism and constant ‘jumlabazi’ but “what are you achieving on the ground”.

Singhvi said it was shameful and deplorable that the government was not admitting that it was helpless in the face of such terrible violations which cost the country in terms of lives of precious civilians and jawans.

Singhvi claimed that in 2013 Modi used to attack the then UPA government and shame it whenever casualties happened but is now silent when there are far more of them.

Citing figures, he said in Jammu and Kashmir, 91 civilians and 198 soldiers lost their lives in 35 months of NDA rule, while during the same period of UPA during 2011-14, 50 civilian and 103 jawans were killed, which is half of the current number.

In last 35 months of UPA there were 470 ceasefire violations by Pakistan and 85 terror incidents, while under Modi government they rose to 1343 and 172, which have more than doubled, he claimed.

In the North East between 2011-14, 229 civilians and 47 jawans lost their lives, but after the BJP came to power the number rose to 344 and 99 respectively.

In Naxal violence, 442 civilians and 278 jawans lost their lives, while in the 35 months of UPA there were 367 and 268 deaths of civilians and jawans, he said “I want to ask the prime minister that he would not tolerate such things (then) why is the country of 125 crore suffering silently. He then said ‘Shame, Shame, Shame on you who are running the Government of India’, you are spraying acid on the wounds of 125 crore Indians,” he said.

On Jammu and Kashmir, he said the state seems to be on auto-pilot and there seem to be two governments there–one in Jammu and one in Srinagar.

“Unfortunately, a government formed in haste, steeped in greed of power and has not been able to function for a single week in Jammu and Kashmir,” he claimed.

“Therefore, there is a listless, directionless government which is leading to a complete lack of coordination on the ground,” he claimed.

Singhvi said one is worried about attacks by Pakistanis, terrorists, Naxals and other elements. He also accused the government of lacking coherence.

In the case of China, the Congress leader said one is treated to semantic jugglery which would make a lexicographer blush while referring to the government’s claim that Chinese incursions were “transgressions .

“Who is giving clean chit to China–Modi’s government– and what is China doing to you? It is giving you the biggest insult, slaps over (issues of) Hafeez, renaming 6 towns in Arunachal Pradesh, opposing you in the UNSC,” he said.
