Chennai, Oct 1 (PTI) Customs department personnel here have seized 2.28 kg of gold worth Rs 1.48 crore from some 12 air passengers on arrival from Dubai in the last two days.
The sleuths, on suspicion, intercepted some passengers who arrived separately on Tuesday and Wednesday, and recovered the precious metal in paste form concealed in their rectum.
A senior official said the passengers were carriers, referred to as 'kuruvis' (birds) by the department, since they were asked by a 'sender' to carry the gold promising a 'sum' and hand it over to a 'receiver' upon reaching their destination.
To a query, he said since the value of gold seized from each of the passengers was less than Rs 20 lakh the passengers were not arrested.
According to the customs department, a passenger who gets caught on concealing gold valued upto Rs 20 lakh is warned and let off by the authorities after collecting their personal details.
If the passenger gets caught again in a similar incident and value of gold crosses Rs 20 lakh, he gets arrested, officials said.PTI VIJ BN WELCOME BN WELCOME
