Vinod Khanna joined BJP and represented the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat four times. After two years of embracing the saffron party, Khanna got elected to Lok Sabha in 1999. Considering his importance, Bharatiya Janta Party took him to Central Government where he was appointed as the Minister of State of Culture. However, he lost the parliamentary elections in 2004 after the Congress routed the Bharatiya Janta Party along with Akali Dal. He was re-elected to the lower house of parliament in 2009 despite the Congress again swept the election in 2009.
