Germany became the third defending champion in the last 16 years to lose its opening match at the World Cup. And after their shocking loss to Mexico on Sunday, 17 June, Twitterati couldn’t help but ask whether the champions will even make it to the knockouts this year.
Hirving Lozano scored the lone goal in the 35th minute, picking up Javier Hernandez's pass inside the penalty area and beating Mesut Ozil before shooting past Manuel Neuer from 10 yards.
France in 2002 and Spain in 2014 were the other defending champions to lose their opening matches, and neither of those teams advanced from the group stage!
In fact, even Italy failed to make the knockouts in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, after winning the previous edition.
Here’s a glimpse at what Twitter’s talking about after Germany’s big upset!

Germany getting eliminated in the group stages?— Total Football (@eTotalFootball) June 17, 2018
~ Brazil are the only World Cup winners since 1994 to actually qualify for the knockout rounds in the next World Cup.
France didn’t qualify in 2002, Italy didn’t qualify in 2010, and Spain didn’t qualify in 2014. Amazing stat.
Anyone else realised that if Germany now dont top the group, Englands path to the Semis is pretty clear!— Darius Syrossian (@DariusSyrossian) June 17, 2018
Germany qualifying 2nd means they fall into a massive 2nd round game with Brazil & go into the same half of the draw as Belgium, Brazil, France!
This is Englands year ??
Congrats to Mexico, good game to Germany, and whoo boy this group is about to get interesting. I still think Germany is going through, but it's gonna be tougher than expected!— Marcus (@EpicNameBro) June 17, 2018
