Serie A: Gattuso must re-invent himself to improve mediocre Milan

Gattuso's tactics caused AC Milan to lose against Inter and if he doesn't change it may cost him his job

Gennaro Gattuso will no doubt find himself in hot soup after how the Milan derby unfolded. For most AC Milan fans, the display put on by their team was an embarrassment.

Gattuso for his part must shoulder the blame for setting up his team in such a toothless manner. Rino wanted to go for the draw but ended up with a defeat that only leaves his team cast further adrift of reaching the Champions League spots.

In the first half Milan only recorded four touches in the opposition’s penalty box. Such a baffling statistic only points out how bereft of possession they were against an Inter side that seemed much hungrier.

Gonzalo Higuain never looked more isolated than he has been all season. It is no question that this Milan side is lacking in creativity. Exacerbating matters is when the so called creative players such as Hakan Calhanoglu and Suso fail to step up.

Gattuso for his part should have introduced the likes of Diego Laxalt and Samu Castillejo into the starting line-up to inject some needed attacking options. Instead he goes with the likes of Ignazio Abate who is a spent force and should be sold in the summer.

However the real problem with the Milanese giants in recent times has been the midfield. There is just simply no playmaker to call upon and ever since Andrea Pirlo’s departure, the gaping hole has never been replaced. This is where Gattuso needs to give Alen Halilović a chance and start playing him because it is widely reported that he has the ability.

For Gattuso his job will be in serious jeopardy as the Rossoner continue to languish in 12th position. Many are beginning to question his coaching credentials with commentators highlighting how tactically inept he can be. Antonio Conte and Zinedine Zidane are some of the managers linked to the Milan hotseat. It certainly does not bode well for the former World Cup winner.
