Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese premier Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, 30 November, held a trilateral meeting, the second among the three countries after a gap of 12 years, on the sidelines of the G-20 summit here to discuss cooperation in various areas.

The Russia-India-China meeting came hours after Prime Minister Modi, his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe and US President Donald Trump held their first trilateral meeting on the margins of the summit. PM Modi termed the meeting ‘JAI’ (Japan, America, India), literally translating to victory.

Modi arrived in the Argentinian capital on Thursday to attend the 13th G20 summmit.

PM Modi Arrives in Buenos Aires

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, 29 November arrived in Argentina's capital of Buenos Aires to attend the 13th G20 summit. He is expected to discuss ways to meet the new and upcoming challenges of the coming decade with other world leaders, including US President Donald Trump.

He was greeted by the Indian diaspora at a hotel in Buenos Aires.

On the sidelines of the two-day summit, Modi, Trump and Japanese Premier Shinzo Abe will hold a trilateral meeting amidst China flexing its muscles in the strategic Indo-Pacific region.

The trilateral, which would be an expansion of the bilateral meeting between Trump and Abe, is part of the series of meetings the US president would have on the sidelines of the G20 summit on 30 November and 1 December.

What's on PM Modi's Agenda?

Besides Trump and Abe, Modi will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the sidelines of the event, the Ministry of External Affairs had said on the eve of his departure.

Modi will also meet UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Argentinian President Mauricio Macri, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, along with the prime ministers of Spain, Jamaica, the Netherlands and the president of the European Union and the European Council.

A bilateral meeting between Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron is also being worked out.

The prime minister will also speak on his flagship programmes like the Jan Dhan Yojana, the Mudra scheme, Ayushman Bharat, and soil health card at the G20 Summit.

Modi will make a pitch to countries who are not within the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn to join the International Solar Alliance. He will also highlight the risks posed by oil price volatility and raise the issue of combating terror financing and money laundering.

Among the issues to be discussed will be the strengthening of the WTO. The meeting is being held amid the ongoing trade war between the US and China.

Modi said that through the 10 years of its existence, the G20 has strived to promote stable and sustainable global growth.

"I will highlight the need for reformed multilateralism which reflects the contemporary realities and can effectively strengthen collective action for global good," he said.

Trump Cancels Sit-Down With Putin

Just a day before the G20 summit opens, US President Donald Trump on Thursday, 29 November cancelled the sit-down with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Argentina following Russia’s seizure of three Ukrainian naval ships last weekend.

The Kremlin had said on Wednesday, 28 November that it expected the meeting between Putin and Trump to go ahead as planned.

PM Modi Meets Chinese Prez Xi Jinping, Discusses Ways to Strenghten Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Buenos Aires and discussed how to strengthen the bilateral ties between the two neighbours.

The two leaders have met twice after their informal summit in the Chinese city of Wuhan in April – once at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit held in June in China's Qingdao and the second time at the BRICS summit in South Africa's Johannesburg in July.

Modi told Xi that he was looking forward to host him for an informal summit next year, reported PTI.

"Today's meeting will be important in proving a direction in terms of strengthening our relations," Modi said.

"“This year has been very important for relations between our two nations. I am confident that the coming year would be even better.”" - PM Modi, as quoted by ANI

"Such initiatives are helpful in maintaining the momentum," the prime minister said, adding that there "have been two review meetings – in Qingdao and in Johannesburg."

"I express my heartiest thanks to you (President Xi) for taking out time for this meeting," he said.

After the meeting, the PMO tweeted that the two leaders held productive discussions.

India Dubs Trilateral Summit 'JAI'

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted that the “first-ever” trilateral summit between the US, Japan adnd America ‘JAI’ – which in Hindi means victory or success.

The meeting assumed importance in the wake of China flexing its muscles in the strategic Indo-Pacific region.

Asserting that India will "continue to work together on shared values," Modi said, "The 'JAI' (Japan, America, India) meeting is dedicated to democratic values...'JAI' stands for victory (in Hindi)." The prime minister also said the meeting was a convergence of vision between the three nations.

The Japanese premier said he was happy to participate in "the first ever 'JAI' trilateral". Trump appreciated India's growth story during the meet.

The leaders emphasised the importance of cooperation among the three countries on all major issue of global and multilateral interests such as connectivity, sustainable development, counterterrorism and maritime and cyber security.

World Going Through Extraordinary Changes: PM Modi

According to MEA spokesperson, the leaders discussed cooperation and coordination in various areas which could contribute to global peace and stability.

Speaking at trilateral meeting, PM Modi said that the world was going through “changes and uncertainties.”

“There is no doubt that the world today is going through extraordinary changes and uncertainty. This increase in geopolitical tension is affecting global governance,” said PM Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met President of Chile Sebastian Pinera on the sidelines of the summit. The two leaders reportedly discussed enhancing cooperation in trade and investment and health, among other issues.

India Presents 9-Point Agenda on Fugitive Economic Offenders

India on Friday, 29 November, presented a nine-point agenda to G20 member nations calling for strong and active cooperation among them to comprehensively deal with fugitive economic offenders.

The agenda was presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the second session of the G20 Summit on international trade, international financial and tax systems.

“Cooperation in legal processes such as effective freezing of the proceeds of crime, early return of the offenders and efficient repatriation of the proceeds of crime should be enhanced and streamlined,” the agenda read.

India also called for joint efforts by G-20 countries to form a mechanism that denies entry and safe havens to fugitive economic offenders.

"Principles of United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime (UNOTC), especially related to 'International Cooperation' should be fully and effectively implemented," it said.

Japan, US, India Express Need for Peace in Indo-Pacific During First Trilateral

Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale on Friday, 30 November, said that Japan, US, and India have expressed the need for prosperity and peace in Indo-Pacific during their first ever trilateral meeting.

“They all agreed that a free, open, inclusive, and rules-based order is essential for the (Indo-Pacific) region's peace and prosperity," Gokhale was quoted by ANI as saying.

He further stated that the leaders had agreed on the central role of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) to achieve peace and prosperity.

G20 Enters Last Day, Meeting Between Trump and Jinping on the Agenda

The G20 summit will enter its crucial second and final day on Saturday, 1 December with hours left for diplomats to bridge divisions on major issues including world trade, climate change and tackling migration, AP reported.

The day will also see a highly anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose nations have been embroiled in an escalating trade war with new US tariffs on China goods set to take effect a month from now.

Trump Cancels G20 Press Conference 'Out of Respect' to Bush Family

US President Donald Trump cancelled a press conference planned for Saturday, 1 December at the G20 summit, saying he wanted to show respect to the family of late President George HW Bush.

"Out of respect for the Bush Family and former President George HW Bush we will wait until after the funeral to have a press conference," Trump tweeted.

Briefing the media on the G20 Summit, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has held a number of bilateral visits on the sidelines of the summit.

“The area Prime Minister touched on in general with leaders of the European Union, Netherland PM and Germany Chancellor, was the issue of jointly combating terrorism which is a global phenomenon,” Gokhale added.

He also said that the Argentinian Prime Minister is keen to make a visit to India and PM Modi has extended an invitation to South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa to be chief guest for India's Republic Day in 2019 and Ramaphosa accepted it.

US, China Agree to Halt New Tariffs After 1 January

The United States and China agreed Saturday in a long-anticipated summit to hold off on new tariffs after 1 January, Chinese state media said following a months-long trade war.

The China Daily and Chinese international broadcaster CGTN both said President Donald Trump and his counterpart Xi Jinping agreed to halt tariffs "after January 1" -- when Washington has been set to impose USD200 billion in new tariffs.

India to Host G-20 Summit in 2022

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced that India will host the G-20 summit in 2022, the year the country would celebrate the 75th anniversary of its Independence.

The G-20 is a grouping of the world's 20 major economies.

Modi made the announcement at the closing ceremony of the two-day summit held in Argentina's capital.

Italy was to host the international forum in 2022.
