Three men and a woman were arrested in Dum Dum on Sunday for allegedly duping nearly 2,000 unemployed youths of about Rs 4 crore by promising them railway jobs.
Government Railway Police, Sealdah, picked up the four from a rented apartment in Motilal Colony, where they had been staying for a year.
A Birbhum resident named Moinul Haque lodged a complaint with police on December 10 saying that three men named Gopal Malakar, Dibyendu Pradhan and Prasenjit Bag had taken Rs 2 lakh from him and given him a fake appointment letter for a railway job.
"Haque also alleged that a woman who was part of the racket had pretended to be a doctor and conducted medical tests on him," said an officer of Sealdah GRP.
The three men, who hail from West Midnapore, and the woman, Sonali Guri, from Muchipara in central Calcutta, were arrested in the pre-dawn raid on Sunday.
"About 2,000 unemployed youths were victims of the racket. The accused targeted young men and women across the state and collected about Rs 20,000 from each," said a GRP officer. "Such a racket is difficult to run without the help of rail officials," he added.
