Former Mates Wish Sourav “56 Inch Chest” Ganguly on 47th Birthday

Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly turned 47 on Sunday, 8 July. The cricketer turned administrator is now a part of the commentary team in the Cricket World Cup in England.

Having made his international debut in 1992, Ganguly burst onto the internation scene in 1996 during India’s tour to England. He scored a ton on his Test debut at Lord’s and followed it up with another century at Trent Bridge.

Having taken over he captaincy in 2000, after Mohammed Azharuddin had to controversially step down amid match-fixing allegations, Ganguly started a new trend in Indian cricket - of aggressive captaincy.

Under him, Indian won a Test series against Australia in 2001 against a formidable Australian team led by Steve Waugh. The victory in the Kolkata Test match remains the best moment of that Test series victory.

His next big achievement was winning the Natwest Final against England in 2002 at Lord’s. ‘Dada’ removing his shirt at the Lord’s balcony remains a sight that is still fresh in the mind of the Indian fans.

Taking India to the 2003 World Cup final was Ganguly’s highest point as India captain. However, they lost the final against a mighty Australian team led by Ricky Ponting on the day.

Ganguly retired from international cricket in 2008, after making a memorable comeback in 2006 since getting dropped from the team in 2005.
