Final Death Toll in London Grenfell Tower Fire is 71: British Police Claims
London, Nov 16: Five months after the fire that engulfed the high-rise Grenfell Tower in London, British police claims the final death toll in the blaze is 71. The police reportedly identified 71 people from the remains, including a still-born baby.
Initially, death toll in the fire was estimated to be around 80. Several survivors were irked at the pace of investigation and sought the exact number of people killed in the blaze. London’s Metropolitan Police said that specialist teams pushed the boundaries of what was scientifically possible to identify people.
Fire in the 24-storey tower reportedly began in a refrigerator in an apartment before racing through the entire building. Following the fire, it was revealed that the building lacked proper safety features and fire control measures. It was also revealed the building materials were substandard and not designed for fire incidents. A total of 255 people escaped it, earlier reports claimed.
According to AP, police are considering individual and corporate manslaughter charges over the fire.
