I fear for my life, says prime witness in rape cases against Asaram, Narayan Sai
Mahindra Chawla, one of the prime witnesses in the rape cases against self-styled godman Asaram Bapu and his son Narayan Sai has expressed fears about his safety and that of his family members.
This comes just ahead of the verdict against Asaram that will be delivered by a court in Jodhpur today.
Asaram is accused of rape in two cases in Surat and Jodhpur. His son, Narayan sai is also accused in the Surat case. Today's verdict pertains to the case in Jodhpur, while the trial in the Surat case is on.
Chawla, a resident of Sunauli village of Haryana's Panipat district, is currently provided protection by three policemen, including an inspector-rank officer.
However, he said this security is inadequate.
In 2014, Chawala had a narrow escape when he was attacked and two bullets were fired at him allegedly by aides of Asaram.
"Asaram and his son Narayan Sai are maniacs. They are fooling people under the guise of religion. I trusted them and became their follower. However, after living with them I found that they are not saints but goons in disguise," Chawla said.
He has also demanded death sentence for Asaram who is accused of sexually exploiting a minor girl.
Meanwhile, in anticipation of a possible law and order breakdown in the aftermath of the court's verdict, the local administration in Panipat has beefed up security.
When Asaram's was arrested, many of his followers had come on roads to protest against it. Many of them were also arrested.
