Father-Son Murdered: Bengal BJP Blames TMC, Locals Claim Land Feud

Dipak Mahato, 27 and his father, Lalmohon Mahato, 52 were hacked to death in Purulia, West Bengal on Wednesday, 11 July. The state BJP has claimed, in a press release, that the two belonged to the OBC category and that they worked for the party in Turuhulu village. The party has alleged that the Trinamool Congress is to blame for the deaths since the father-son duo protested the TMC’s policies.

However, local sources told The Quint that the two were killed in a clash between two families of Turuhulu village – in which four others also sustained serious injuries.

BJP Blames TMC

According to a BJP press release, the father-son duo had protested against TMC’s alleged corruption in the distribution of Miniket rice in their panchayat.

In a tweet from the official account of BJP Bengal, the party alleged that the two were killed by goons from the TMC. The party further stated that 27 BJP workers were killed in the state, among which five belonged to Purulia.

Minister Babul Supriyo and BJP state president Dilip Ghosh took to Twitter to condemn the incident and blamed TMC for the killing.

‘Family Feud Led To The Murders’

Local sources said the family of Lal Mohan Mahato was embroiled in a long-standing enmity with a man named Brinchi Mahato – who is currently admitted at Purulia Sadar Hospital with serious injuries. Sources said that on 1 July, a heated argument brooke out between the two families over a land dispute. The clash turned bloody as both family members took out sharp weapons to attack each other.

There have been no arrests in the case. SP Akash Magharia (Purulia) has said that an investigation is on in the matter and that there are necessary actions will be taken against the accused.
