FA 'bails out' City

London: Leading referees are concerned about "mixed messages" from the FA after Vincent Kompany, the Manchester City captain, had a red card rescinded on appeal Tuesday.

Kompany was sent off for "serious foul play" during City's 2-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday, but the red card and three-match suspension were revoked Tuesday when his appeal was upheld by the FA's independent regulatory commission.

The decision comes as a relief to City, who had feared that they would be without their most influential central defender for three matches at a time when Kolo Toure is on Africam Nations Cup duty with Ivory Coast.
