Jallikattu is a bull-taming event, celebrated every year during the occasion of Pongal. It is a sport conducted as a part of Mattu Pongal, which falls on the third day of four-day long festival Pongal. It is mainly celebrated in various parts of Tamil Nadu and holds a special place for the farmer community down South.
After a 10-year-long battle led by animal activists, PETA and various organisations, Jallikattu was banned by the Supreme Court in May 2014.
The Supreme Court ruled that flouting of the ban will attract penalties and upheld the ban on January 14, 2016 when the Government of India passed an order reversing the ban imposed. This led to a massive outrage by the public in Tamil Nadu in 2016 as many revolted against SC's decision.
The event of Jallikattu is currently taking place in Madurai's Alanganallu. Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Deputy CM O Panneerselvam also attended a Jallikattu event.
Two cars were displayed as an award at the Alanganallu's Jallikattu event.
