English Premier League 2017-18: Manchester City Beat Newcastle United to Extend Their Record-Winning Streak

Pep Guardiola's side is now 15 points ahead of second-place Manchester United.

New Delhi: Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal of the game as Manchester United beat Southampton 1-0 at St Mary’s to remain at top of the points table.

In the 20th minute of the game, United’s Ashley Young made space to whip the ball into the box with his right foot as Lukaku towered above Southampton’s centre-backs and powered his header in on goal from the edge of the six-yard box.

However, goalkeeper Forster made an excellent one-handed reaction save to push the ball away but he could only divert it right back into the path of the Belgian striker who reacted quicker than the Southampton defenders and knocked it into the net.

Southampton started the second half on attacking note and they were dominating the Red Devils. The home side also enjoyed a number of close chances in the latter half but failed to find a deserved equaliser as United grab 3 points by winning the game 1-0.

In a different match, Manchester City thrashed Crystal Palace 5-0 at home as Raheem Sterling scored a brace, while Leroy Sane, Sergio Aguero and Fabian Delph netted one goal each for City.

City were dominating throughout the game and they took the tally to 21 goals and added a fourth clean sheet of the season.

On the other hand, Crystal Palace missed some early chances which came their way and they have now lost all six of their opening games. This equals Portsmouth’s dubious feat at the beginning of the 2009-10 term, and if Roy Hodgson’s side go down next week they equal Pompey’s mark of seven straight losses overall.

It was the fifth win of the Premier League season for both Manchester United and Manchester City which keep them at top of the points table, with Pep Guardiola’s men only ahead of their rivals on goal difference.
