Enyimba chairman, Felix Anyansi has revealed that the People’s Elephant are going ahead with their Federation Cup Round of 64 tie against Wasiu Alabelewe of Osun State to prepare for their engagement with Rayon Sports of Rwanda in the quarter-final of the Caf Confederation Cup.
Some feel that the People’s Elephant should have called for a postponement of their game in Nigeria’s oldest club cup competition because of their key fixture on the continent but Anyansi Agwu said that they do not want to give room for fixture congestion.
He also said that they see the game as an opportunity to test the preparedness of their players for the first leg against Rayon Sports in Kigali instead of looking for ways to dodge matches that they must later honour.
“We are playing against our opponents in the FA Cup in Warri and not Benin City has earlier cited in the release from the organizers,” Anyansi Agwu told Goal.
“We are playing the game because it is a good opportunity for us to see our players and how far they have progressed since our last game with CARA Brazzaville. We don’t have to give room for fixture congestion when we can manage the situation.
“We know we have professionals as players and they will do their assignment very dutifully without any complaints. We want to beat our opponents in the Round of 64 and also do well away to Rayon Sports.”
Enyimba are seeking a fifth Federation Cup diadem having won it in 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2014.
