Egypt not to run constitution referendum in two stages: Report

Cairo, Dec. 12 (Xinhua-ANI): Egypt will not run the referendum on the draft constitution scheduled for Dec. 15 in two rounds, pan- Arab Al Jazeera TV quoted Wednesday the head of the Higher Commission for Elections as saying, denying some earlier media claims.

The official remarks came after some private Egyptians newspapers reported earlier Wednesday that President Mohamed Morsi had issued a decree Tuesday night ruling that the constitutional referendum process inside Egypt would be in two separated stages-the first on Dec. 15, and the second on Dec. 22.

Meanwhile, Egyptians expatriates started Wednesday morning casting their votes for the constitutional referendum in an electoral process set to end on Saturday.

Egyptian at home are to take part in the referendum on the controversial draft constitution on Saturday despite the opposition's call for a nationwide protest, urging to postpone the referendum until a consensus is reached.

Morsi has reportedly given the army the power to arrest, and called on the civilians to help the police maintain the security for the referendum. (Xinhua-ANI)
