Pop star Ed Sheeran said he used to binge eat until he vomited due to his “very, very addictive personality”.
The Shape of You singer has admitted he has struggled with addictions since finding fame and fortune and has revealed his behaviour has lead him to eating and drinking so much, he has to throw it back up.
In a rare interview for an American self-help book publisher, the 29-year-old said he finds it “very hard to moderate” what he consumes.
The Sun reports Sheeran told the publisher he noticed traits described in music legend Elton John’s autobiography in his own behaviour.
Talking of passages from Elton’s book, he said: “There are so many things that he did that I do. He would be like, ‘I would just go on an ice cream binge and eat four f***ing desserts until I throw it up’, and I was like, ‘I’ve done that before’.
"Or his martini binges, where he sees how many he can drink. And I’m like, ‘I’ve done that before too’.”
The singer added: “I think things like sugar, sweet stuff, junk food, cocaine, alcohol, it feels good the more you do, but it’s the worst thing for you, I think.
“I think with addiction, it’s just very hard to moderate, but moderation is the key.”
The star went on to say he is unable to “do things by halves” and says he sees “no point in having a glass of wine” and would “rather have two bottles”.
While appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show in 2017, Sheeran said touring constantly lead to “substance abuse” with friends eventually taking him aside to warn him to be careful.
Speaking to host Ross he said: “I was constantly working on tour. And all the pitfalls that people read about, I just found myself slipping into all of them. Mostly, like, substance abuse.
“I didn’t really notice it was happening. It just started gradually happening, and then some people took me to one side and were like, ‘Calm yourself down’… It’s all fun to begin with, it all starts off as a party and then you’re doing it on your own and it’s not, so that was a wake-up call and taking a year off.”
