The Election Commission will meet today with Tamil Nadu Director General of Police Rajendran, Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan, Home Secretary Niranjan Mardi and a top Revenue Department official, to discuss poll preparations in J Jayalalithaa's former constituency, Chennai's Dr. Radhakrishnan (RK) Nagar, the Tamil news channel Puthiya Thalaimurai (PT) reported.
The meeting will take place at 3 pm in New Delhi, the report said.
RK Nagar will elect a new legislator on April 12. Among the main contenders for Jayalalithaa's seat are the candidates representing two rival factions of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) - former Presidium Chairman E Madhusudhanan (from the AIADMK Puratchi Thalaivi Amma) and Deputy General Secretary TTV Dinakaran (representing AIADMK Amma).
Also in the fray are the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's (DMK) Maruthu Ganesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Gangai Amaran, and Deepa Jayakumar, Jayalalithaa's niece.
The Election Commission has taken a slew of measures to ensure campaigning and polling happen smoothly in RK Nagar.
On Saturday, the poll panel said no vehicle belonging to government departments and used by ministers and other political leaders could enter RK Nagar, PT reported.
As well, the Commission has appointed five observers for the by-poll - the highest-ever number in Indian electoral history, by its own admission.
The poll panel, which has received complaints of voter fraud and election symbol misrepresentation during the RK Nagar by-poll campaign, on Saturday decided that 10 companies of paramilitary forces would be on duty in the constituency.
