Eating Breakfast Daily Can Reduce Risk of Type-2 Diabetes: Study

We have often been advised not to skip breakfast as it’s the most important meal of the day. Now a new research shows the importance of having breakfast daily.

A new research conducted by a group of German researchers found that skipping breakfast occasionally might be associated with a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

For the research, which was published in The Journal of Nutrition, the team analysed the data from more than 96,000 people, spanning 6 separate studies. The findings suggested that skipping breakfast even once a week was linked with a 6 per cent higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Skipping breakfast 4-5 times a week lead to an increased risk of 55 per cent.

As reported in Business Standard, Jenna Freeman Scudder, RD, a dietitian at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center said:

"Some small studies suggest that skipping the morning meal can actually lead to more insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is a condition that requires more insulin to bring blood sugar into the normal range. And when it’s chronic, there’s a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes." - Jenna Freeman Scudder

In Type 2 diabetes, the body produces insulin but can’t process it properly. The early warning signs are hard to spot and sometimes people brush it off as stress and fatigue.

Type 2 diabetes usually develops in people over the age of 45 and the risk factors could include being overweight, physical inactivity, and in certain cases, genetics.
