Delhi University Professor ‘Insults’ Goddess Durga on Facebook, Booked For Hurting Religious Sentiments
New Delhi, September 24: An assistant professor from the University of Delhi allegedly posted ‘insulting’ contents about the Hindu goddess Durga, which sparked a row with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) demanding his suspension. National Democratic Teachers Front also filed a police complaint against the professor who used obscene terms against Durga. Initially, the police said they filed a complaint but were yet to lodge an FIR in the matter. Later on Sunday, reports claimed the assistant professor has been booked for hurting religious sentiments.
Identified as Kedar Kumar Mandal, an assistant professor from University of Delhi’s Dayal Singh College reportedly posted the obscene remarks on Durga on Facebook at 07:43 pm on Saturday. However, the post was deleted later, reports claimed.
The ABVP while demanding immediate suspension of Mandal, said if action against him is not taken, he will continue to spread hatred among students. News agency PTI quoted a statement by the student body’s Dayal Singh College unit, where they said, “Mandal has provoked sentiments during a festival time of Hindu – Navratri.”
Noteworthy that the teachers body, National Democratic Teacher’s Front which lodged the complaint at the Lodhi Colony police station, is backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
University authorities have not yet commented on the issue or the demand of ABVP for his suspension. PTI said they could not reach Mandal for comments about the whole episode.
