Drunk 28-year-old rammed his BMW into cab and auto, injures driver and a couple

A resident of Karol Bagh, 28-year-old Rajat Prabhakar, was returning from the airport and was allegedly drunk when he lost control over his BMW and rammed into a Swift-Dzire leaving the cab driver and a couple injured.

In the third incident of its kind recently, a BMW rammed into a cab and auto before hitting the boundary wall of a residential area in RK Puram on Sunday morning. The accident took place on Major Somnath Sharma Bagh Road in sector 9, when the accused, Rajat Prabhakar (28), was reportedly driving his vehicle on the wrong side.

Prabhakar, a resident of Karol Bagh, was returning from the airport, and was allegedly drunk. He lost control over his vehicle and rammed into a Swift-Dzire, injuring the driver Pradeep (35) and a couple on the rear seat.

The couple - Munni Dutta (28) and Bitoo Pal (32) - were on their way to the airport. The impact of the hit was so powerful that the front left portion of the Swift Dzire was damaged badly.

All the injured were reported to be critical but stable when reports last came in. The couple hails from Assam. After hitting the cab, the BMW collided with an autorickshaw parked on the roadside. Auto driver Ram Chander (60), who was sitting inside his vehicle, was also injured. All the injured were rushed to AIIMS.

"The driver of the car has been arrested and is said to have been under the influence of alcohol. We have also recovered a liquor bottle from his car and are questioning him," said Chinmoy Biswal, additional DCP (South).

"He did his schooling from Shimla and studied B.Com from DU. He is currently helping his father in their business," he added. A case has been registered at RK Puram police station and the vehicles involved have been impounded. Official data show a sharp rise in road accidents in India - one every four minutes. Almost 97% road accidents are caused due to rash or negligent driving, including driving under the influence of alcohol, data show.
