With the premiere of the final season of Game of Thrones just around the corner, the creators decided to give the fans one last thrill.
Streaming service Spotify has dropped a playlist called Game of Thrones: The End is Coming but listen at your own peril because according to the show’s co-creators David Benioff and Daniel Weiss, “ The answer to the ending is one hundred percent hidden in the playlist choices.” “No one will believe us, but it’s true,” they added.
We decided to take the risk and check out the playlist to find out whether we could deduce any of these alleged clues.
‘Sleep Now in the Fire’ – Rage Against the Machine
‘Sleep Now in the Fire’ by Rage Against the Machine has lyrics like, “Crawl with me into tomorrow/Or I’ll drag you to your grave”, which sounds awfully similar to Daenerys’ claim before she burns Randyll and Dickon as they refuse to ‘bend the knee’. “I offer you a choice, bend the knee and join me...or refuse and die,” she says. Could this mean that we’ll see someone else earn Khaleesi’s wrath?
‘Immigrant Song’ – Led Zeppelin
With lines like “We come from the land of ice and snow/From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow,” this 1970s hit has likely been used as a reference to the Night King. Some fans have taken this as confirmation of the theory that Bran might be Night King.
There’s more. Take the lyrics: “ So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins/For peace and trust can win the day/Despite of all your losing”. Could this mean that the Seven Kingdoms might have to forget their differences and unite to have a chance at defeating the Night King? Let’s admit it, they haven’t been doing great so far.
‘The End’ – The Doors
In ‘The End’, The Doors frontman Jim Morrison croons, “Waiting for the summer rain”, which could offer weight to the fan theory that a great flood will wipe out the whole of Westeros. For instance. The song could also mean that most of the armies die and those left will join the Night King “doing a blue rock on a blue bus”.
‘Be My Fire’ – The Blue Stones
“ Baby, be my fire/Oh, be my flame. Well, I heard you whisper to all your friends. I heard you telling them that you need a man in whom you can depend,” In season 7, we saw Jon and Dany becoming really “close friends”. Could this song be confirming Melisandre’s prophecy that a “prince will come forth with his flaming sword and save the worshippers of the Lord of Light”? There has been wide speculation that the prince in question is Daenerys and Jon’s child. Admittedly, Mirri Maz Duur told Dany that she was barren but is she really a reliable source?
‘Her Black Wings’ – Danzig
In The Door, the fifth episode of season 6, Bran finds out that another being was responsible for creating the White Walkers. Is 'Her Black Wings’ by Danzig alluding to her? The lyrics go: “ Her stride is such, mortals freeze/When she walks past/And she comes down to me/And she offers me sleep/Under her black wings”.
Okay, maybe we’re reading too deep into these songs, or are we? We’ll leave you with these lyrics from ‘Howlin for You’ by The Black Keys, which is also on the playlist. “Mockingbird, can't you see?/There's something wrong with this plot/The actors here/Have not got a clue/Baby, I'm howlin' for you.”
There’s also a chance that the makers of Game of Thrones are just messing with us. We’ll soon find out!
