Dimitar Berbatov reveals brilliant reaction to Manchester City's interest in signing him

Dimitar Berbatov could have signed for City, but he only had eyes for United

Dimitar Berbatov has revealed his reaction when his agent told him Manchester City were also interested in signing him before his move to city rivals United.

The Bulgarian completed a £30m move from Spurs to United on the final day of the summer transfer window in 2008, however they were not the only side willing to stump up the cash for him.

City has just been taken over and had money to splurge, with their eyes firmly set on Berbatov. Unfortunately for them, the then 27-year-old was not interested, telling his agent it was not about money.

Mark Hughes’ City did secure the signing of Robinho at the same time as Berbatov completed his Old Trafford switch, but the Bulgarian’s tale of events will delight Red Devils supporters.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, Berbatov explained: “I think it was the night before City signed Robinho from Real Madrid and my agent said, ‘Berba, there’s another team in for you’.

“I said, ‘F*ck off, we’re going to Man United’. He said, ‘But they’ll give you more money!’

“It’s not all about the money sometimes, though. I was like a horse with blinkers.

“For me it was the right decision because going to the top of the mountain was my dream, especially when you come from Eastern Europe, from a small town, and no one’s done it before you. It was a great feeling.”

There was some ill-feeling amongst Spurs fans as Berbatov left with the team struggling at the start of the 2008/2009 season, having lost their first three games.

While Berbatov acknowledged it was not easy, the lure of United and fulfilling a childhood dream was too good to turn down.

“It’s difficult,” he added. “You see it all the time with players moving clubs.

“In my case it was me simply following my path, because ever since I was a small boy, I’d always imagined playing for the biggest club in the world.

“When that moment arrived I know a lot of people were angry with my choice, but I needed to follow my path.”
