Digital tablets help improve reading of visually impaired

Washington, November 12 (ANI): People with moderate vision loss can regain the ability to read quickly and comfortably by using digital tablets, according to a new study.

A small study of 100 people with eye diseases such as macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy demonstrated a reading speed increase of 42 words per minute using the iPad with an 18 point font and a 12 word per minute increase using the Kindle with the same font.

Using a tablet with a back-lit screen resulted in the fastest reading speeds for all study participants, no matter what their level of visual acuity, the researchers said.

Daniel Roth, M. D., an associate clinical professor at Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine, presented the research at the 116th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. (ANI)
