New Delhi, Oct 23: Diwali turned tragic for a youth and his family after a water dispute turned violent. 22-year-old Akash was battling for life in hospital after he was beaten up with sharp iron rods and shot at by his neighbours over a water dispute in Salahpur, near Kapashera in Delhi on Diwali. The incident was caught on camera by a resident of the area in his mobile phone.

A group of men were seen thrashing Akash with rods. His family members, who tried to protect him, were also beaten up. A gun shot was also heard in the video as a bullet hit Akash’s leg.

Akash was taken to Safdarjung Hospital, where he is battling for life. His mother Vandana was quoted by Times of India as saying that her son was sitting outside his house when thhe men came and dragged him out. She said Arun Sharma, who supplies borewell water in the area, along with some other men, beat her son up and shot at him.

“Sharma supplies borewell water in the area. My son had an altercation with him a few days ago over payment, which was resolved at that time. On Diwali, some kids were bursting firecrackers in the street. Some men who work for Sharma started misbehaving with them. They saw Akash sitting there and later came with Sharma and started beating him up,” she said.

The police have registered an FIR against the main accused Arun Sharma and have sent teams to arrest him and his co-conspirators. Sharma had contested the recently concluded councillor elections from Bijwasan.
