Rajya Sabha member and Olympic boxing medalist Mary Kom enthralled the audience at an event on Wednesday to honour organ donors’ families when she sang ‘Ajeeb dastan hai yeh’. Kom had a bad throat, yet sportingly sang the old Lata Mangeshkar favourite. Throughout the ceremony, most dignitaries, including Union ministers Dr Harsh Vardhan and Kiren Rijiju, were emotional as families walked forward to receive their awards and the emcee read out the stories about the donors.
In The List
Wednesday’s Supreme Court ruling bringing the office of Chief Justice of India under the purview of the RTI Act held that assets declared by judges voluntarily with the CJI would be available under RTI. The verdict was delivered by a bench comprising CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Justices N V Ramana, D Y Chandrachud, Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna. The Supreme Court website lists seven of 34 judges of the top court under the head “assets of hon’ble judges”, CJI Gogoi and Justice Ramana being among the seven. The other judges who delivered the verdict — Justices Chandrachud, Gupta and Khanna — do not feature in the list.
After ‘K’, Raising ‘A’
Pakistan’s foreign secretary Sohail Mahmood raised the issue of Ayodhya verdict at a meeting with Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) resident ambassadors in Islamabad and pointed out that this has been on the OIC’s agenda since 1992. While this is another attempt by Islamabad to score a point against New Delhi, it will be interesting to watch how OIC responds to this. So far, there hasn’t been any statement from OIC or any member-country.
