Delhi: 1 dead after Class 12 student runs over people sleeping on footpath

The accident took place early Thursday morning and police apprehended the driver of the car.

At least one person died and three more were injured after a car ran over people sleeping on a footpath in New Delhi's Kashmiri Gate area.

The Hyundai i20 car is believed to have been driven by a Class 12 student who has been apprehended by police. The driver's age is being verified.

The accident took place at around 5.45 am today morning and it is not known if the driver was drunk at the time.

According to early information, the driver, who has been identified as one Samar Chugh, recently turned major on April 15. Samar, a student of DPS, Mathura, and is the son of a businessman.

Samar, a Model Town resident, was accompanied by two of his friends, including one named Ujjwal, whose father owns the i20 car that was involved in the accident. The three boys initially tried to flee, but were nabbed by Delhi Police.

Cops later detained Samar and are likely to invoke Indian Penal Code section 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder).

The owner of the car - Ujjwal's father - is likely to be booked as well.
