Deepika Padukone, Taapsee Pannu, Alia Bhatt and Others Stand in Solidarity with the Students of JNU

The mob attack on the students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi has sparked nationwide outrage, with several artists from the Indian film industry condemning the attack. Notably, some of the country’s top actresses have spoken strongly against the violence and the current political climate of the country.

Last night, actor Deepika Padukone visited the JNU campus in Delhi to express solidarity with those who were protesting against the violence that was unleashed by masked miscreants on students and professors on January 5.

Though soon after Deepika’s visit to the campus, hashtags such as #boycottchhapaak, #boycottbollywood #JNUfilmpromotions started trending on leading social media sites, Deepika’s courageous gesture was lauded by her colleagues and fans alike.

Before Deepika, Taapsee Pannu, Zoya Akhtar, Richa Chadha, Dia Mirza, Reema Kagti were among those who joined the Carter Road protest in Mumbai on Monday against the JNU violence.

While some stars have come out on the streets, many top actresses and filmmakers across the country are speaking up against JNU violence through their social media accounts.

Malayalam film actress Manju Warrier also expressed shock over the visuals of bleeding faces of students on television. She wrote, “JNU was always a symbol of knowledge in this country, many who studied in JNU are now leaders and ruling us. Though their politics may differ, their patriotism cannot be questioned. Though their ideologies may differ, the violence witnessed in the institution, wherein even outsiders had entered the campus and attacked the students, cannot be justified. We cannot keep mum. We need to stand with them.”

Seeing so many top actresses speaking up their mind, sharing opinions and backing one another is indeed exhilarating. May the force be with them!
