Cyclone Tauktae: PM to Visit Gujarat & Diu, Conduct Aerial Survey

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Gujarat and Diu on Wednesday, 19 May, to review the situation arising out of Cyclone 'Tauktae', which had made landfall late on Monday. The PM will be conducting an aerial survey of the affected areas in Una, Diu, Jafarabad, and Mahuva, and will also be holding a review meeting in Ahmedabad, ANI reported.

Meanwhile, the cyclonic storm weakened into a deep depression and lay centred over the Gujarat region, the India Meteorological Department said late on Tuesday.

At least three lives were lost due to the storm in Gujarat, while six people died in Maharashtra.

Cyclone Tauktae Weakens Into Deep Depression: IMD

Cyclone Tauktae weakened into a deep depression and lay centred over the Gujarat region, the India Meteorological Department said late on Tuesday.

"It is very likely to move north-northeastwards and weaken gradually into a depression during the next 12 hours. Remnant of the system is very likely to move further northeastwards across Rajasthan to west Uttar Pradesh during 19 and 20 May," the IMD said.

PM Modi to Visit Gujarat, Diu Tomorrow; To Conduct Aerial Survey

Navy, ONGC 'Actively Engaged' in Rescuing Crew of 'P-305' Vessel

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited said on Tuesday that the Indian Navy and ONGC are actively engaged in rescuing the crew of the vessel 'P-305'.

"All drifted vessels, except 'P-305', are taken in control, and their crew is safe," it was quoted as saying by ANI.

Vaccination Drive Suspended in Gujarat Till 20 May in View of Cyclone Tauktae

The COVID-19 vaccination drive in Gujarat has been suspended in view of the situation arising out of Cyclone Tauktae. It will resume on 20 May, the CM's office said.

Cyclone Tauktae Likely to Weaken Into Deep Depression: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday evening that the cyclonic storm Tauktae is over the Gujarat region and is likely to weaken into a deep depression.

"It is about 120 km south-southeast of Deesa (Gujarat), and 35 km west of Ahmedabad and 80 km east-northeast of Surendranagar (Gujarat). It is likely to weaken into a deep depression within three hours," the IMD said.

Gujarat's Amreli, Bhavnagar, Rajkot, Surendranagar to Witness Heavy to Very Heavy Rain

According to Manorama Mohanty, Incharge Director, MET, Ahmedabad, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur in Amreli, Bhavnagar, Rajkot and Surendranagar. She added that the cyclonic system is weakening and will deteriorate further. Its impact will be in place only today.

Cyclone Weakens to 'Cyclonic Storm' Level: NDRF Chief

The cyclone has weakened into a ‘cyclonic storm’ level and in another couple of hours, it is likely to become a ‘cyclonic system’ which is a much lower category. By the time it reaches the Gujarat coast, late in the evening, it will be a depression, NDRF Chief SN Pradhan has said.

Despite the state CM saying that the storm caused three casualties, the state emergency operation centre (SEOC) of Gujarat has said that there have been no deaths at all.

3 Lives Lost in Cyclone 'Tauktae': Gujarat CM

Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani has informed that three lives have been lost, around 40,000 trees have fallen and 16,500 huts have suffered damages in the state due to Cyclone ‘Tauktae’.

Unfortunate incidents involving three construction barges of Afcons, deployed for an ONGC project at the Western Offshore fields in the Arabian Sea, and an ONGC drilling rig out for exploration purpose have occurred owing to the severe cyclonic storm.

The ONGC is taking all possible measures in coordination with ODAG (Offshore Defence Advisory Group) and MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) to ensure the safety of personnel and vessels.

At Least 146 Personnel Rescued from Sunken Barge P305

Over 146 personnel have been rescued so far from the drowned Barge P305 due to the cyclone. As per the Defence PRO, aerial search commenced at first light with Indian Navy.

Search and rescue operation had continued through the night by INS Kochi and INS Kolkata, and offshore support vessels Energy Star and Great Ship Ahalya joined the effort.

The ‘extremely severe’ cyclonic storm ‘Tauktae’ had weakened into a ‘very severe’ cyclonic storm category and lay centred at 11:30 pm on 17 May over Saurashtra, about 30 km northeast of Diu.

The Mumbai airport resumed flight operations at 10 pm after being shut for 11 hours, a statement said.

Cyclone 'Tauktae' Makes Landfall

The landfall process for Cyclone 'Tauktae' has started and will continue during the next two hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said late on Monday.

“The extremely severe cyclonic storm Tauktae lies close to the Gujarat coast,” it said.

'Indian Army Units, Formations Prepared to Provide Relief'

With Cyclone Tauktae expected to cross the Gujarat coast on Monday night, the Indian Army, in a statement, was quoted as saying, "With the impending landfall of the extremely severe cyclonic storm forecast in coastal areas of Gujarat, Indian Army units and formations have prepared themselves with substantial teams along with elements of communication and engineer task forces to provide relief and all kinds of assistance."

6 Dead, 9 Injured in Maharashtra

At least six people have died and nine others have been injured in Maharashtra in the damage due to Cyclone ‘Tauktae’.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray made an assessment of the damage and instructed that the relief works be quickened, his office said.

As many as 2,542 houses have been damaged in the affected districts of Ratnagiri, Sindhudruga, Raigad, Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Pune, Kolhapur and Satara.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant held a meeting to review the Tauktae cyclone impact in the state via video conference.

“Issued directions to all the departments to work on war-footing to restore essential services and also assess the damage in detail,” he was quoted by ANI as saying.

Moderate to intense spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 90-100 kmph is likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Raigad, Palghar, Mumbai, Thane and Ratnagiri during the next three hours, the IMDB said.
