Wilfried Zaha has escaped FA punishment after appearing to poke James Ward-Prowse in the eye in a fiery half-time altercation during Crystal Palace’s 2-0 defeat to Southampton.

Zaha and Ward-Prowse clashed as they made their way off the pitch at Selhurst Park last night.

The pair have a history after Zaha was sent off at St Mary’s last season for losing his cool and sarcastically applauding the referee following a clash with Ward-Prowse.

Hostilities were resumed last night as Zaha raised his hands towards the midfielder. Referee Andre Marriner missed the incident and Jonathan Moss, the video assistant referee, reviewed it from Stockley Park and decided against taking action as replays were inconclusive. Zaha could still have faced retrospective punishment, but the FA confirmed this morning that no action would be taken.

Palace were lacklustre and their squad — ravaged by injury — finally caught up with them. Manager Roy Hodgson is desperate to strengthen before the window closes this month.
