COVID-19: India’s Tally Over 2.26 Lakh; Big Spikes in TN, UP, WB

India's coronavirus tally surged to 2,26,770, with biggest single-day rise of 9,851 new cases on Friday, 5 June. According to the Health Ministry data, the death toll stands at 6,348 with 273 new fatalities, while 1,09,461 patients have been cured or discharged.

States like Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh recorded the biggest one-day spike in COVID-19 cases on Friday. While Tamil Nadu reported 1,438 new infections, taking the state's tally to 28,694, UP saw 496 fresh cases, which took its tally to 9,733.

Meanwhile, amid the reports of patients not being able to find beds in Delhi's COVID-19 hospitals, the Delhi government has issued new SOPs for these hospitals. The Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government said it will be the responsibility of the hospital to shift patients to another hospital if beds are not available. The hospital will also provide medical care to the patient till that time.

Biggest One-Day Spike in West Bengal

Eleven more fatalities on Friday pushed the COVID-19 death toll in West Bengal to 294. The highest daily spike of 427 cases was also recorded on Friday, taking the state's tally to 7,303.

1,438 New COVID-19 Cases in TN, Tally Rises to 28,694

Tamil Nadu on Friday reported the biggest one-day spike, with 1,438 new COVID-19 cases, taking the tally in the state to 28,694. Twelve deaths were also reported on Friday, while 861 patients were discharged.

111 New COVID-19 Cases in Kerala, Tally Rises to 1,697

As many as 111 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Kerala on Friday, taking the tally in the state to 1,697, including 973 active cases, state CM Pinarayi Vijayan was quoted by ANI as saying.

Maharashtra on Thursday reported the highest number of deaths in a single day with 123 fatalities, taking the death toll to 2,710, as per state officials. As many as 2,933 new COVID-19 cases were reported, taking the tally in the state to 77,793.

Delhi Govt Issues New SOPs for COVID Hospitals 

In a new SOP for COVID-19 hospital, the Delhi government says COVID-19 patients shall be brought to the triage area from the ambulance without asking for any details. This process must be completed in 15 minutes.

The new rules also add that it will be the responsibility of the hospital to shift a patient to another hospital if beds are not available.

'We Need Global Solidarity to Ensure Access to Vaccine': WHO

"Right now, there is no COVID-19 vaccine. As we work together to develop one, there's an important lesson we need to understand. A vaccine, by itself, isn't enough. We need global solidarity to ensure that every person, everywhere, will have access," ANI quotes UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as saying.
